The Two Sisters

Jean-Honoré Fragonard – France, circa 1769–1770

Embrace the lightness and tenderness of a childhood moment, captured by Fragonard's delicate brushwork. In this touching scene, two little girls play in the Rococo era: one rides a small papier-mâché horse, while her sister carefully urges her on. At their feet, a Punchinello—a puppet with a mischievous mask—once added a touch of fantasy, now gone, a discreet reminder of times gone by.

Painted in oils, the canvas, now reduced to about half its original size, was originally much larger. A contemporary print reveals the entire lost composition, and a pastel by the Abbé de Saint-Non, Fragonard's friend and patron, faithfully reproduces the whole.

With its range of tender colors—pale yellow, delicate pink, satin turquoise—and its vaporous touch, this masterpiece evokes the sweetness of early years and the poetry of simple gestures that last.
